If you go to Lalbagh at 6:10 AM, you will see a completely different garden. No ticket counter queue, no tourists with cameras. Just 200-300 people, mostly from Basavanagudi and Jayanagar, doing their laps around the lake. I started going for morning walks there in December last year, and for the first week I also thought there is a monthly pass or something. There is a lot of confusion online about it.
So let me clear it for you.
Morning Walk Timings in Lalbagh (2026)
Lalbagh is not open 24 hours. The gates for morning walkers open early.
Morning Walk Slot: 6:00 AM to 9:00 AM
Evening Walk Slot: 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM
After 9:00 AM, the regular public entry starts. If you enter at 6 AM for a walk, you are supposed to leave by 9 AM. The security will start checking tickets after 9. I have seen them stopping people near the Glass House at 9:05 AM.
The garden is open all 365 days, even on Sundays. During the flower show (January and August), the morning walk timings remain the same, but Gate No. 1 gets very crowded, so use Gate No. 3.
Is There Any Entry Fee for Morning Walk? Monthly Pass Explained
This is the most searched question and this is where most blogs give you wrong info.
For morning walkers (6 AM – 9 AM) – Entry is FREE. Yes, completely free. You don’t need to buy any ticket. The same is for the evening slot 6 PM to 7 PM.
I asked the guard at West Gate (Siddapura Gate) about the monthly pass. He said the old yearly identity card system for walkers was stopped after COVID. Now there is no separate monthly pass for morning walk. You just walk in for free during that slot.
The regular entry fee of Rs. 30 for adults is only applicable if you enter after 9 AM and stay beyond. So if you are only going for a walk, don’t pay anything.

Which Gate is Best for Morning Walk?
Lalbagh has 4 gates and if you enter from the wrong one, you will walk 1 km extra just to reach the main jogging track. For morning walk, this matters.
Gate No. 3 (Siddapura / West Gate) – This is the best gate for walkers. Why? The main jogging track around Lalbagh Lake starts right from here. Maximum regular walkers use this gate. Parking is also easier on the RV Road side early morning.
Gate No. 1 (Double Road Gate) – Very crowded in the morning because of MTR and people coming from MG Road side.
Gate No. 2 (East Gate) – Good if you live in Jayanagar side.
My suggestion: If it’s your first time, enter from Gate No. 3. You will find the lake on your right within 2 minutes.
Rules for Morning Walkers – What I Learned
Lalbagh is a 265-year-old botanical garden, not a normal park. So rules are strict.
- No loudspeakers or music. A guard stopped a man playing music on his phone near the Rose Garden.
- No plucking flowers or leaves. Fine is Rs. 500.
- Cycling is NOT allowed inside during morning walk hours. You have to park your cycle at the gate.
- Dogs are not allowed, even for morning walk.
- You cannot sit on the grass with outside food before 9 AM. The garden staff will ask you to leave.
The main jogging track is around 3.2 km if you do one full circle from West Gate to Glass House to Lake and back. Most regulars do 2 laps.
My Personal Experience and Best Time
I usually reach by 6:15 AM. Between 6:15 to 7:00 AM, the light is perfect, the Rose Garden side is almost empty and you can actually hear birds. After 7:30 AM, the crowd starts.
If you want peace, go on weekdays. Saturday and Sunday morning, Lalbagh looks like a fair, with 500+ walkers.
One tip: After your walk, go to MTR near Lalbagh West Gate. Their idli and filter coffee after a 5 km walk is something else.
